It hasn't snowed in Indiana yet this week, even though it's only Tuesday. But none seems to be in the forecast and the weather's above freezing. Spring must be on it's way, so Summer is headed to Indiana County soon!

SHP 2009

Hello Everyone!

SHP is back on the web!

This year's program will run from July 12 to July 25, and will feature a number of great programs.

Science kids, get ready, because there are a bunch of options to choose from this year.

CSI: IUP will be returning along with physics, biochemistry, chemistry 1, chemistry 2, biology, and psychology.

Also this summer we will have journalism, law, English/education/writing, and business/economics.

In addition to these classes, we will have fun and intriguing Honors Core classes to round out each day.

Applications will be mailed soon, but if you're too excited to wait, you can find the application online at the SHP website: http://old.www.iup.edu/honors/shp.shtml

Let me take this time to introduce myself.

My name is Emily Mross, and I am the coordinator/head counselor for SHP 2009.

I am a sophomore English and Journalism double major.

I first attended SHP as a rising high school junior. My mom found a blurb about it in IUP Magazine and told me this was what I'd be doing in Summer '05. I applied, got in, and had a great time. Such a great time, in fact, that I came back the next summer.

I had so much fun in Summer '06 that when it came time to make my college choice, the Honors College was at the top of my list, and by the end of my search process it was the only place I knew I wanted to be.

Last summer I had the opportunity to be a counselor for the program, and it was yet another summer of fun. I am so excited to be a part of SHP again this year, and I cannot wait to see everyones' smiling faces when they walk into Whitmyre Hall this July.

Until then, I'll be holed up in the Whit basement, making sure everything gets ready.

Summer Honors Program 2008 Alumni

The Robert E. Cook Honors College 2008 Summer Honors Program has officially come to an end, but the memories are just beginning to unfold. The friendships made during the two weeks of the program will grow and foster a whole new network of highly motivated and successful high school students. Already Facebook groups are cropping up and hundreds of photos are emerging.

Some of those pictures are captured here:

This was the slideshow displayed at the end of the closing ceremony to commemorate the amazing stduents and experiences at this year's program. It shows a glimpse of the people that made this year's Summer Honors Program so great.

Many students from this year's program are already excited to apply again next year. Each year the program sees several returners as well as scores of new students from all over the nation and world.

For the students of the graduating Class of 2009 this is the last Summer Honors Program for which they are eligible, but many choose to apply to the Robert E. Cook Honors College for early action or regular decision to make IUP their home. Summer Honors Program alumni make up a considerable percentage of each entering freshman class, thus it is a great benefit to have this sort of experience available to list on a college application. The faculty and staff of the Summer Honors Program wish the best of luck to the Class of 2009 in their senior years, college searches, and all other future endeavors. We know you will all make us tremendously proud!

The faculty, staff, counselors, and students of Summer Honors Program 2008 bid a fond farewell to this year, but will carry memories of this exciting program with them for years and years to come!

SHP 2008 Updates

Here are a few Robert E. Cook Honors College Summer Honors Program updates to keep you all informed as to what’s been happening in our office to prepare for the program in July:

*Website Updates*
The tentative itinerary has been updated. We will continue to update it in the coming weeks as we plan evening activities for arrival day, activities for the weekend of July 19-20, and the closing ceremony with brunch on Saturday, July 26. Parents are invited to this brunch celebration of the students’ accomplishments, as well.

The SHP Counselors link is now active! Check out who will be working with you this year and get to know the counselor or counselors in charge of your “major” class.

*Important Reminders*

Deposits ($100) and the three required forms (student expectations, guardian permission, and medical) are due by this Friday, June 13!

Note: Please do not overnight anything. Simply send it via normal post and inform Mara Iverson if your payment or forms will be a little late. It’s better than spending the additional money for fast postage.

Your balance (after deducting applicable scholarship and deposit amounts) is due by Monday, June 30.

Please send all flight arrangements to Mara via email as soon as possible. If you have not yet purchased plane tickets, please follow these simple guidelines

·        Plan to arrive no later than 1pm on Sunday, July 13 to Pittsburgh International Airport

·        Plan to depart no earlier than 6pm on Saturday, July 26 from Pittsburgh International

·        Shuttles will take you to and from the airport, so we appreciate you making plans according to the above times to allow for efficient transport of all air travels to PIA (two hours away).

*Coming Soon*

We will be adding Core professors to the link for SHP professors. Be thinking about which Core unit you might like to take. We will explain Core and the unit selection process upon your arrival to the program.

We are designing a T-Shirt for SHP this year. All students will receive a T-shirt at no additional cost. We will update the website to begin the process of taking size orders by the end of the month.

A FAQ page is also being designed for the website. It will include things such as

·        Are there washers and dryers in the residence hall available for student use, and how are they operated?

·        Do students have roommates?

·        How much spending money should students bring?

** Please email m.m.iverson@iup.edu with any suggested questions or leave a comment on this blog. The more questions you ask, the more the answers will benefit all students in the program.

Journalismstudents RECHC Summer Honors Program

for High School Students

July 13th - July 26th, 2008

Robert E. Cook Honors College's Summer Honors Program is a place where talented high school students come together for two weeks and form a community of scholars who explore academic and collegiate living in a real college setting. Working closely with dedicated professors offers promising students the unique opportunity to experience college life while still in high school.

Students will live with counselor-in-residence in Whitmyre Hall, share meals in the dining hall, and learn with senior IUP professors during each day's classes. Evening activities expose students to college life outside the classroom. The program closes with a Saturday brunch with faculty and family.

SHP/SHARE Halloween Reunion

We are gearing up for the first-ever Summer Honors Program/ Summer Honors Arts Residence Experience Halloween Reunion!

All students who attended SHP/SHARE during the summer of 2007 are invited to IUP on Saturday, November 3rd and Sunday, November 4th to meet up with the friends they made in July and enjoy a Halloween party.

Students will arrive Saturday morning to Whitmyre Hall, the

Robert E. Cook Honors College building. The day will include an IUP football game and the students will get to plan and implement their own Halloween party from the ground up!

Sunday the SHP and SHARE students will have an in-house brunch before traveling back home.

Student whishing to RSVP can do so here

http://www.iup.edu/honors/SHP/Reunion/index.HTML

This is the first time the Honors College has tried sponsoring a reunion event, but we were prompted by the enthusiasm of this summer’s participants to give it a try. They took the initiative to plan their own small reunion at Hershey Park a month after the program ended, so we thought it would be great to organize an official gathering for this unique group.

We hope to make reunions more frequent as future SHP/SHARE participants continue to develop such close ties.
